Day At The Beach

Summertime

for school-age children
A brief respite
from the grind
of school work and homework
of teachers and tests
of learning and listening
and forever sitting still

an eager longing
with anticipation
growing fidgety, waiting
for its arrival

like the weekend
only longer

with no cares
and no worries

laughter and laughing

food and fun
with family

freedom

free to be
free to do
free to run

barefooted at the beach
bouncing beach balls
building sand castles
drinking lemonade

sunscreen
suntans and sunburns
blisters

oh the blisters

and the endless peeling

hours spent
climbing trees
swimming splashing
jumping diving
on road trips
and late night adventures
in far away places
doing nothing
and doing everything

memories of bygone days
looking back at what once was

reminiscing

of a time
when things were simpler
when the world was young
and not so full of war and hatred
not so eager for power and wealth
hell bent on its own destruction

we were wealthy then
with the wealth of innocence

O for a return of summertime

  2. One day I hope to be back there – through contemplative prayer. This poem and the art brought me a couple of steps closer.
